If ownership and values matter most, choose Buycat VPN (independent, built by Boycat) or Proton VPN (Swiss, independent). If you want the largest server network and don't mind conglomerate ownership, NordVPN leads on raw scale. ExpressVPN is owned by Kape Technologies, a British-Israeli company, which is why many Boycat users avoid it.

Most VPN comparisons start with speed. For a lot of our readers, the first question is "who am I paying?" ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and ZenMate all belong to Kape Technologies. Switching between them doesn't change who gets your money. See our sourced list: VPNs owned by Israeli companies.
Big VPNs advertise $2–$3.49/month, but that's usually a 2-year plan paid upfront, and it renews at a much higher price. NordVPN Basic, for example, renews at $139.08/year. Buycat VPN renews at the same price you paid, and we email you 30 and 7 days before every renewal with a one-click cancel link.
Buycat VPN, Proton VPN, Mullvad and IVPN are all independent of Kape.
Yes, on year-1 price for comparable device counts, and much cheaper at renewal, because Buycat VPN doesn't use intro pricing.
